KUALA LUMPUR - In a dramatic turn, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) announced that the final decision on the proposed revaluation of properties that will lead to an upward revision in assessment has been put on hold until March, while the Federal Territories Minister has apologised for his “mistake”.
His deputy Datuk Dr J. Loga Bala Mohan said this during a debate on the allocation for the Ministry in Budget 2014.
“I have good news for MPs, especially those in Kuala Lumpur. The implementation has been deferred until March next year,” he said.
Dr Loga Bala added that engagement with various stakeholders will continue through public hearing sessions starting Dec 17 until March.
Meanwhile, in an unprecedented move, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor apologised to city folk over the proposed assessment fiasco which he said was blown out of proportion due to the valuation notice being sent out instead of letters to city residents.
“I admit my mistake. I was the one who made that mistake,” Tengku Adnan confessed.
“When I gave out the instruction to DBKL, I never told them to give it back to me (to check) before they sent it (notices) out,” he explained.
“They should not have sent the notices out. What they should have done was to send out the letters first explaining the situation,” he told reporters after chairing a closed-door meeting with Federal Territory Umno chiefs and their representatives at the DBKL headquarters yesterday
He assured residents that more would be revealed on Dec 17, the last day for city folk to send in their objections.
“A panel will be set up to look at their views, suggestions and feedback and based on all that, we will decide on the matter.”
StarMetro earlier reported that the ministry was mulling a reduction of the valuation amount to substantially reduce the assessment, with one source saying that the quantum could be reduced between 50% and 70%.
“He (Tengku Adnan) agrees there should have been a gradual increase in the assessment every five years, and not a sudden hike,” said the source.
